The use of lasers in experimental aerodynamics
Abstract
Optical methods for visualizing supersonic gas flows with complex shock wave configurations and boundary layer separation which make use of the specific properties of lasers are examined. Practical implementations of some of the methods are described, and an analysis is made of the reliability of results obtained with these methods. In particular, attention is given to a study of supersonic three-dimensional flows by the 'laser knife' method and the use of the secondary source method for visualizing three-dimensional conical flows.
