A microcomputer system for real time digitized image compression
Abstract
This paper is concerned with a microcomputer system which can be conveniently used for the encoding of a digitized image. The encoding proceeds simultaneously with the acquisition of the image data. The model on which the system is based makes use of chain codes proposed by Freeman (1974). Details regarding the employed model are considered along with the procedures used by the compression algorithm, the system's architecture, aspects of system efficiency, and the experimental results. It is pointed out that the nucleus of the considered system is a hardwired assembly, which is appropriately designed to implement the compression algorithm with the highest possible degree of parallelism.
