Acoustic emission monitoring of lathe tool degradation
Abstract
Tool wearing and breaking detection by acoustic emission is studied. The parameters examined included wear velocity, hard point breaking, and machine noise interference. Steel specimens and tungsten carbide tools were used. The results show a sudden increase of acoustic emission in the case of tool breaking and a linear relationship to wearing. Complementary tests are necessary to define a generalized correlation applicable to a wear monitoring system.
