Carbon and M stars in NGC 205
Abstract
Broadband VRI and narrowband CCD frames were obtained at CFHT of the central region of NGC 205, the dwarf elliptical companion of the Andromeda galaxy. The narrowband images isolate TiO and CN and colors formed from the photometry of these images allow carbon and M stars to be unambiguously separated. Among the stars with reliable photometry, 7 carbon stars were found together with 21 late M stars with spectral types as cool as ≡M5. The presence of carbon stars in NGC 205 implies that star formation has been an ongoing process in this dwarf elliptical galaxy.
