The accuracy of the radiation parameterization in mesoscale models
Abstract
A parameterized and a nonparameterized mesoscale atmospheric circulation model were compared in order to quantify the accuracy of the atmospheric radiation parameterization. The intercomparison was made using benchmark codes and the modified Pielke model. The spectrum was divided into the solar and terrestrial domain, and the radiation transfer equation was solved. The modified Pielke model gives for the downwards radiation flux densities at the soil, values that are 15 to 30 W/sqm too high. The heating rates resulting from the modified Pielke model are within the error bars of the benchmark codes.
