Swirling flows in typical combustor geometries
Abstract
The results of experimental attempts and subsequent computational efforts targeted at improving numerical models for swirling recirculating confined turbulent combustion flows are reported. Attention was focused on the mean flow patterns, scales and shapes of the recirculation zones, mapping the flowfield time-mean velocity, normal and Re shear stresses, and producing a predictive computer code based on the TEACH-T program. The work was performed mainly by graduate students. The studies covered swirl strengths, swirler performance, the effects of downstream contraction nozzle size and placement, expansion ratios, and inlet side-wall angles. The STARPIC program was developed in FORTRAN 4 for computing air flow through expansions and over a wide range of inlet swirl vane angles.
