Transient predictions of lateral jet injection into typical isothermal combustor flowfields
Abstract
A fully three-dimensional turbulent time-dependent computer simulation is being used to investigate primary and dilution lateral jet injection into a typical combustor in the absence of combustion. Predictions of the transient and time-mean flowfield of a deflected turbulent jet in a confining cylindrical swirling crossflow are presented. The effect of jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios of 2, 4, and 6 in a cross flow with swirl strengths of (swirler vane angle) 0, 45, and 70 degrees were investigated. Predictions are compared with deflected-jet flow visualizations using smoke and neutrally buoyant helium-filled soap bubbles. Single and multilateral jets are also considered in the investigation. The predicted results exhibit good agreement with the trajectory and spread pattern of the jet obtained using flow-visualization techniques. The transient three-dimensional code utilizes a finite-difference explicit-time-marching scheme in cylindrical coordinates. Turbulence is simulated by means of the two-equation k-epsilon turbulence model.
