Passive film shutters with thiopyrilocyanine dyes for picosecond infrared lasers
Abstract
High-radiation-strength passive film shutters, which can be used to generate ultrashort pulses in YAG:Nd(+3) lasers with maximum output energy and minimum pulse length, are discussed. Performance of seven film shutters, fabricated by impregnating polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) films with thiopyriloheptamethinecyanine dye or with its meso-substituted analogues was investigated. The shutters were tested with respect to maximum pulse energy and minimum pulse length, transmittance, bleaching rate, and relaxation time. Three PMMA shutters were found to be superior to the best of the passive liquid dye-based shutters in their output radiation performance.
