The Onsager reciprocity relations in the thermodynamics of Boltzmann-Volterra materials
Abstract
The applicability of the Onsager (1931) time-microreversibility (TMR) hypothesis to viscoelastic materials with memory which follow the Boltzmann-Volterra (BV) law (Boltzmann, 1874) is investigated analytically. A thermodynamical model of BV materials is developed without recourse to any symmetry relations and taking the nontrivial consequences of the Galilean law of inertia into account; the model is used to obtain a phenomenological description of TMR; the Onsager hypothesis is proved for this case; and the further consequences of TMR are explored.
