VARAN-S: An airborne synthetic aperture radar for research in microwave remote sensing
Abstract
An X-Band side-looking airborne radar, VARAN-S, was tested in real aperture mode in the Marginal Ice Zone experiment. The VARAN-S is planned to work in SAR mode. The digital raw data, recorded on-board over a swath width 10 km, is processed with 3 m resolution without multilook, or 9 m resolution using 9 looks. Two polarizations (H and V) are available. The VARAN-S is designed to simulate satellite-borne radar images to make microwave remote sensor users ready for satellite data analyses and help the development of satellite-borne SAR.
