Laser forward and backscattering in particulate media
Abstract
A mathematical model of optical and infrared wave propagation in scattering media is derived from Maxwell's equations. It allows for the calculation of the irradiance profiles of the forward- and the backward propagating beams which result from the interaction of a coherent beam with a scattering medium. The method accounts for all orders of scattering and is applicable to inhomogeneous media. The range of validity is limited by the condition that the fractional volume occupied by the particles to the 1/4-th power must be much smaller than unity.
