The effects of extreme temperatures on thermocouples
Abstract
A study of type K thermocouple response to extreme temperatures was conducted at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. Oven experiments with lengths of thermocouple cable were performed and temperature measurement errors were recorded between 900 and 1270(0)C. Impedance measurements on the thermocouple cables were made between 22 and 1100(0)C and dc to 10 MHz. A computer model of thermocouple behavior was developed. Good agreement with impedance measurements was attained. Methods for validating thermocouple readings using impedance measurements were developed.
