Characteristic modes of dipole antenna elements
Abstract
A system of basis functions in the form of characteristic modes (CMs) of a single antenna element, calculated with allowance for currents on the feeds, is proposed for the electrodynamic simulation of multidipole antenna structures. The physical meaning of the CMs and their role in the formation of the radiation characteristics are examined for two dipole-element designs. It is shown that the utilization of a CM basis leads to a significant reduction in the computer time needed to solve the system of equations.
