A reexamination of the range resolution dependence of backscattered power observed by VHF radars at vertical incidence
Abstract
Experiments have been conducted using the 40-MHz Sunset radar in Colorado and the 50 MHz Poker Flat, Alaska, MST radar to reexamine the range resolution (Δr) dependence of backscattered power for Fresnel scatter. Sunset radar observations now show a (Δr)1 dependence for backscattered power provided Δr > 1 km. For Δr < 1 km, results vary from day to day but are closer to (Δr)1 than (Δr)2. In an independent experiment the Δr dependence of backscattered power observed by the Poker Flat MST radar was also found to be close to (Δr)1.
