Improvement in performance of FH-BFSK by applying bit interleaving in fading channels
Abstract
The bit error rate (BER) performance of Spread Spectrum Frequency Hopping (SSFH) equipment was measured using a wideband fading simulator and a newly designed interleaver adapted to the SSFH equipment. It was found that bit interleaving is effective for burst errors in a flat (nonselective) fading channel, while for a selective fading channel BER performance is improved in some cases and not in others, depending on the method of error correction. This paper describes the interleaver specifications and the BER and burst error performance of the SSFH equipment in the case where the interleaver is used. The effectiveness of interleaving and frequency hopping in fading environments is compared.
