Anomalous mode properties of dielectric ridge waveguides
Abstract
The effect of anomalous field distribution at different modes in the cross section of a dielectric ridge waveguide (DRW), consisting of a dielectric plate with elevated ridges of the same material, is proposed as a solution to the use of DRWs at submillimeter wavelengths. The method of effective permittivities was used to obtain the governing relationships which define such characteristics as field concentration in the central region of DRW and radiation at bends. The relationships were verified by experimental field profiles in the cross section of the DRW. The results permit the dimensions of the waveguide in the transverse direction to be increased considerably.
