Scattering by inhomogeneous dielectric particles
Abstract
The field scattered by an inhomogeneous dielectric subject to electromagnetic radiation of long wavelength is expressed, to zero order, in terms of a pattern matrix. Variational principles are derived for the elements of this matrix. Bounds based on these principles allow estimates of the rate of change of the matrix with change of permittivity and shape of the scatterer. An explicit formula is obtained for the first-order pattern in terms of the solution of zero order. Some remarks are addressed to the problems of convergence and stability of approximations as well as complex permittivity and inverse scattering.
