Nonlinear electrodynamics from quantized strings
Abstract
We compute the effective action for an abelian vector field coupled to the virtual open Bose string. The problem is exactly solved (in the ``tree'' and ``oneloop'' approximation for the string theory) for the case of a constant field strength and the number of spacetime dimensions D=26. The resulting treelevel effective lagrangian is shown to coincide with the BornInfeld lagrangian, [det(δ_{μν} + 2Πα'F_{μν})]^{1/2}.
