Electromagnetic polarizability of the nucleon and chiral quark models
Abstract
The nucleon electric and magnetic polarizability is calculated in chiral quark models with confining potentials of the form if M( r)= crn. Quark core contribution to the electric polarizability α turn out to be small if N∗ resonance states are treated properly. The electric response is dominated by the pion cloud. We obtain α ≅ (7-9)×10 -4fm3 for quark core RMS radii of about 0.6 fm. The magnetic polarizability β is dominated by the quark spin flip transition from nucleon to Δ (1232). We obtain β ≲ 2×10 -4fm3.
