Turbulent mixing of driving and driven gases in the channel of a shock tube
Abstract
The development of a turbulent contact zone in a shock tube during the mixing of driving and driven gases is investigated experimentally. The mean density distributions of the driving and driven gases in the contact zone are determined from the absorption of soft X-rays; the expansion rate and the turbulent diffusion coefficient are estimated. The factors responsible for the development of turbulence in the contact zone are analyzed.
