The restitution coefficient for colliding ice particles in Saturn's rings
Abstract
Mutual collisions of the particles in Saturn's rings will coat the ice with a friable, pulverized layer several millimeters thick, protecting the underlying material from further fracture. On a simple impact model, analytic expressions for the restitution coefficient q as a function of the collision velocity are derived for smooth particles and for particles with a friable ice coating of different thicknesses.
