Gain of a gaussian beam in a free electron laser for finite emittance electron beams
Abstract
The small-signal gain per pass of a gaussian mode in a FEL is expressed analytically as a function of the parameters (cross-section and divergence) of the electron beam. The approach used, which may be applied to both the FEL and the Optical Klystron, is based upon a suitable extension of Madey's theorems. The advantages of the method are discussed, and numerical results are given.
