Soft x-ray laser action using resonant photo-excitation of autoionising states of lithium-like ions
Abstract
It is proposed that certain combinations of doubly-excited levels of lithium-like ions can be used for photo-pumped soft X-ray laser schemes. Autoionisation of the lower laser level removes the constraint on the size of the pumped plasma that is imposed by radiation trapping in other photo-pumping schemes. The scheme is illustrated by considering the photo-pumping of lithium-like fluorine, where, with the pump line intensities available from laser produced plasma, gain of ∼2 cm -1 at 107.6 Å is predicted.
