Estimate of the probability of identifying a star field by means of visual instruments
Abstract
The effectiveness of a visual optical instrument for identifying star fields is considered. The probability of identifying star fields brighter than 3.4 mag is estimated, taking into account the combined effects of the angular field of view of the device, as well as the background luminance. Quantitative relations are obtained which make it possible to estimate optimal design design parameters for an optical star field identifier device.
