Large-angle scattering from an extended weakly random medium
Abstract
Recently, a formal expression was derived for the enhancement factor of the electromagnetic flux scattered at large but nonbackscattering angles from extended weakly random media. The enhancement describes the factor by which the singly scattered power is modified when cumulative multiple forward scattering is taken into account before and after one large-angle scattering. Explicit results are calculated here for a two-dimensional geometry describing cylindrical scattering from a slab of width L filled with a uniformly turbulent dielectric described by a power-law spectrum in the inertial subrange. The result shows that M is close to unity well beyond the mean free path for multiple forward scattering and that M increases when the medium width L exceeds the mean free path for large-angle scattering.
