The Evolution of the Vostok and Voskhod Programmes
Abstract
An historical account is given of the development of Soviet Vostok spacecraft from its Korabl-Sputnik precursors to the Vostok Zh concept and beyond, to subsequent Voskhod spacecraft. It was Vostok 1 that put Major Yurii Gagarin into orbit on April 12, 1961; extravehicular activity was first demonstrated by the Soviets with the Voskhod 2 spacecraft. Attention is given to orbital parameters, crews, mission objectives and technical achievements of each flight.
