Improved Brightness of the ATA Injector
Abstract
The brightness of the ATA injector has been limited as a result of the nonuniform emission of the cathode surface. This difficulty could be eliminated by rearranging the cathode-anode geometry in a suitable manner. This rearrangement makes it possible to accommodate field shaping surfaces and a field emission cathode. Tests of the field emission cathodes have shown that the employment of velvet cathodes resulted in an improvement of the brightness of the ATA injector by a factor of ten. Improvements in the spatial and temporal uniformity of the beam could also be achieved.
