A tutorial on improved systems for color television transmission by satellite
Abstract
An alternative to the NTSC color television system is discussed and compared to NTSC for Direct Broadcasting via Satellite in the Ku band. A new transmission signal based on time division multiplex of the analog components is considered. The exploitation of the principle of time compression of the video signal's luminance and chrominance components is discussed, as is the concept of line sequential transmission of the chrominance components to reduce the time required to transmit chroma. Noise and time compression of the signals is addressed, and the calculation of the signal to noise performance for a Time Multiplexed Analog Components video signal for FM transmission is shown by example. Finally, a significant feature of a new TV system, a widescreen format for presenting motion pictures without cropping, is described.
