Formulas for measuring radar ECCM capability
Abstract
The formulas developed by Li (1984) to quantify the ECCM capability of a military tracking radar are examined in a point-by-point critique taking both technical errors and the role of a modern radar system in a hostile environment into account. It is pointed out that the ECCM improvement factors of Johnston (1974) are only representations of ECCM-device performance and not measures of overall radar ECCM effectiveness, which is determined by complex factors depending on the specific weapon-system application and the ECMs to be countered. In a reply by Li, several of the technical criticisms are disputed, and the value of a purely radar-related criterion of ECCM performance for use by radar engineers is stressed. A number of possible oversights or misunderstandings in the commentator's remarks are discussed.
