Sideband suppression in free-electron lasers with multiple synchrotron periods
Abstract
The sideband instability of free-electron laser oscillators is studied for cases in which electrons undergo multiple synchrotron oscillations while traversing the wiggler. Simulations show sideband growth with associated loss of extraction by one half or more. It is found that introduction of wavelength selectivity can suppress the instability, with recovery of full extraction.
