Two-dimensional effects in free-electron lasers
Abstract
Transverse variations of the wiggler field produce transverse betatron oscillations. Diffraction effects introduce curvature of the optical wavefront which can couple the betatron oscillations to the longitudinal 'synchrotron' oscillations in the ponderomotive potential well. Under resonant conditions, the coupling is marginally strong enough to lead to some detrapping.
