Digital optical signal processing with polarization-bistable semiconductor lasers
Abstract
The direct polarization switching and polarization bistability observed in InGaAsP/InP semiconductor lasers are presently used to generate the operations of a complete set of optical AND, NAND, OR, and NOR gates, as well as clocked optical S-R, D, J-K, and T flip-flops. The schemes proposed for devices of this type are compatible with monolithic integration techniques that are based on existing fabrication technology, and are also applicable to other types of bistable semiconductor lasers.
