A new type of Pc1 geomagnetic pulsations
Abstract
A new type of Pc1 pulsation, termed Pc1S, has been detected in the course of observations in the subauroral zone. It is shown that these pulsations are typical for periods of moderate magnetic activity, and are observed with greatest frequency at Kp = 1-2. These signals are mainly characteristic of subauroral latitudes; they are observed less frequently at midlatitude stations, and are not observed in the polar cap. The dynamic spectrum of Pc1S has the form of a series of successive signals whose frequency and quasi-period of repetition does not depend on the observation latitude. It is suggested that the pulsations are excited in a magnetoacoustic channel beneath the plasmasphere.
