Behavior of the ionosphere in the region of the main ionospheric trough during magnetic disturbances
Abstract
Data from the network of ionospheric stations in the Northern Hemisphere are used to investigate the behavior of the ionosphere in the region of the main trough during three magnetic storms during 1979-1980. A number of distinctive features in the behavior of the trough are identified, including the correlation of the motion of the equatorial wall with the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field. It is hypothesized that the rotational discontinuity of the solar wind affects the behavior of the main ionospheric trough.
