An experimental satellite switch for the maritime mobile telex service
Abstract
The development of an on-board processor for switching telex channels in a future maritime multibeam satellite payload is discussed. The processor requirement, the selection of the access method, and the developed model are described. It is shown that the system is compatible with the current INMARSAT Standard A service on the forward mobile link and that by using a time-division multiplex allocation channel at 57.6 kbit/s, the forward feeder link is optimized. A flexible switching arrangement is implemented at baseband by on-board regeneration, thus providing full-time-space connectivity for 704 telex channels.
