Interpretation of the oxygen VII soft X-ray spectrum from the Puppis-A supernova remnant.
Abstract
The soft X-ray line spectrum from Puppis-A recorded with the Einstein observatory shows line ratios different from those anticipated. Previous interpretations were based upon high temperatures >5×106K and departures from ionization equilibrium. It is shown that an alternative model can fit the observations, in which 1% of fast electrons are present in an otherwise thermal plasma at 1 to 2×106K. This plasma can be in steady-state ionization balance.
