Collisionless Shock Waves in Space and in Astrophysics
Abstract
After the enormous progress on collisionless shock waves in space plasma obtained in recent years with the ISEE mission, it is natural to make a number of considerations on the present understanding of shock physics. This paper tries to answer three fundamental questions: (1) What have we understood? (2) Can we identify areas (or problems) in which progress has been scarce? (3) Can we use our knowledge to understand astrophysical shocks?
