HIPPARCOS Proper Motions for Open Star Clusters
Abstract
For studies of galactic kinematics and evolution, accurate space velocities of many open clusters are highly desirable. HIPPARCOS is able to provide accurate proper motions of open star clusters. In order to derive the proper motion of a whole cluster, a few members (typically three) of a cluster have to be observed by HIPPARCOS. The authors describe the selection criteria used. Up to now, 821 stars in 212 open clusters have been selected and proposed to ESA.
