Computer-aided pull-in range study of phase-lock loops
Abstract
The paper deals with the pull-in range analysis of basically second-order phase-lock loops with triangular and sawtooth phase-detector characteristics perturbed by a time delay and/or an additional time constant. After the method consisting in solving for a limit cycle of the out-of-lock loop has been recognized as the most efficient one, the necessity of using a digital computer is proved. The outcomes of the computer-aided analysis are compared with the closed-form results obtained for type 2 phase-lock loops with a sinusoidal phase-detector characteristic. The dependence of the critical time delay reducing the pull-in range to zero on the dc loop gain is proved. Also, the proportionality of the pull-in range to the fourth root of the dc loop gain when the effect of an extra pole is well pronounced is confirmed.
