Far-infrared solar imaging from a balloon-borne platform
Abstract
Mapping of the far-infrared brightness temperature in the solar atmosphere has been performed with a balloon-borne telescope at a height of 39 km on 1983 April 30. The instrumentation consists of a 60 cm Cassegrain telescope with liquid helium cooled bandpass filters at the wavelengths 50 μm, 80 μm, and 200 μm and a LHe-cooled bolometer. For the first time, complete maps of the solar disk at these wavelengths have been made. In active regions, temperature enhancements were observed of up to 75K at 50 μm, 100K at 80 μm, and 250K at 200 μm wavelength. The average increase of the brightness temperature is of the order of 60K in the upper photosphere as observed at 50 μm and 80 μm, and 150K in the low chromosphere as observed at 200 μm.
