Additional identifications of high ionization stages of iron and nickel in the ultraviolet spectrum of the slow nova RR Telescopii.
Abstract
The wavelengths of forbidden transitions within the ground configuration for around five times ionized iron and nickel have been calculated from level values, established from new, partly unpublished laboratory analyses. The predicted wavelengths of magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole transitions in the ground configuration of these ions have been compared with recently published results of IUE observations of the slow nova RR Tel (Penston et al., 1983). Several unclassified or partly classified lines are assigned to transitions belonging to the multiplet 5D-3D in the 3d4 configuration of Fe V, while four unclassified lines in the line list of RR Tel with wavelengths below 3000 A are identified as forbidden Fe VII, Ni VI, and Ni VII transitions. The possible presence of Fe XI in RR Tel is discussed.
