Modelling and simulation of digital satellite links
Abstract
Satellite transponders are usually nonlinear when operated under conditions which lead to maximum efficiency. The nonlinearity of the transponder makes the calculation of link performance much more difficult than in the linear case. This paper considers models and techniques which can be used to determine the signal and noise characteristics of nonlinear digital satellite links. Because existing analytical methods are complex and limited in application, the main emphasis is on simulation methods and in particular the use of importance sampling to reduce the time and cost of low probability of error simulations.
