The behavior of a toroidal thermosyphon at high Graetz (and Grashof) numbers
Abstract
Two-dimensional heat transfer and fluid flow in a toroidal thermosyphon are investigated analytically, extending the results of Mertol et al. (1982) to higher Graetz numbers and performing a stability analysis on the basis of the friction and heat-transfer correlations. The results are presented in graphs, and it is found that the peaks in the velocity and temperature cross-sectional profiles for Graetz numbers near 100 occur near the tube wall and not on the axis. The stability results are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental data of Creveling et al. (1975).
