Metallicities and distances of galactic clusters as determined from UBV-data.
Abstract
The present investigation of the UV excesses of stars in the (U-B), (B-V)-plane and the M(V), (B-V)-plane gives attention to the blanketing lines in the former, for which a grid of constant metallicity and blanketing lines is constructed to cover the 4500-10,000 K effective temperature range, and the influence of metallicity on absolute magnitude, as well as the effects of the interstellar reddening on a star in this plane. It is shown that, especially in the case of small UV excesses, it is important to use a relation between the two color excesses that is as accurate as possible (i.e., involving second- and third-order terms).
