France officially proposes development of Ariane 5 to ESA
Abstract
France's proposal to start preliminary studies on the LOX-LH2 (liquid oxygen-liquid hydrogen) fueled cryogenic engine HM 60 and Ariane 5 is announced. The decision signifies the development of a launcher capable of lifting heavy payloads and manned minishuttles into orbit. France also confirmed its participation in the European radar observation satellite ERS 1, which is to be designed for experiments on radar observation techniques and for oceanographic and climatological programs.
