Development of free shear layer
Abstract
The relation between the evolution of coherent structures and self-preservation in a mixing layer is investigated. It is shown that in a mixing layer with an initially laminar boundary layer, the three-dimensional transition is triggered by the large straining produced by the merging of spanwise coherent structures. At a short distance from the transition, the mean flow reaches self-preservation.
