Entanglement of two vortex filaments
Abstract
The motions of two co-rotating vortex filaments in an infinite fluid are analysed in order to model the progress of their entanglement and the evolution of three-dimensionality in turbulent shear flows. An equation governing motions of the two filaments is derived on the assumption that the filaments have small curvatures and thin cores. The equation consists of terms representing self-induction and mutual induction expressed via the Biot-Savart law. A particular solution for large deformations of the filaments into a double helix is obtained.
