Experiments on the subharmonic route to turbulence in boundary layers
Abstract
Experiments which demonstrate two distinct subharmonic transition mechanisms are described. One mechanism is a resonant triad interaction and the other is a secondary instability of the streamwise periodic flow to three-dimensional disturbances. Flow visualization with smoke-wire streak-lines and hot-wire anemometer data are used to support these conclusions. The results are compared with previous experimental work and the relevant theoretical models.
