Acoustic microscopy at cryogenic temperatures
Abstract
The resolution of the acoustic microscope is greatly enhanced by using cryogenic liquids for the coupling medium. Liquid Argon, Nitrogen, and Superfluid Helium have all been used for acoustic microscopy during this program. Superfluid helium at temperatures less than 0.2 K emerges as the ultimate fluid for high resolution acoustic microscopy. Using coherent 300 A sound waves in helium, images with a resolution of 200A have been produced.
