Laser diode range finder - target acquisition and tracking system functional model/demonstration model
Abstract
A spaceborne automatic target acquisition and tracking system consisting of a laser diode rangefinder, a two axes beam deflection unit, and a microprocessor control system was built. It incorporates a pulsed diode rangefinder for acquisition and unambiguous range determination and a continuous wave laser diode rangefinder for tracking and precise range measurement. Ranging schemes were assessed to combine all necessary functions in a single ranging device, with the possibility to implement advanced techniques in the follow-on activities. A ranging technique involving a pulsed laser system only is recommended for the demonstration model.
